The 32nd edition shattered attendance and box office records. This edition, which was extended by one day and one performance, was marked by the return of international companies, while reflecting the effervescence and diversity of Quebec creation.

The kick-off of the festival is the result of a collaboration between EX MACHINA and CÔTÉ DANSE. The public saw the first draft of a version of Hamlet associating the talents of dancer and choreographer Guillaume Côté and of the immense theatre man and director Robert Lepage. It featured a spirited program of works choreographed by Brandi Coleman, Melanie George, Lisa Latouche and Kimberley Cooper.

The audience was introduced to choreographer Kyle Abraham, internationally acclaimed for his elegant and explosive identity choreography inspired by African-American culture. Blending hip-hop, post-modern dance and jazz, the iconic pieces performed by his New York-based company, A.I.M. BY KYLE ABRAHAM, bore his signature along with those of Keerati Jinakunwiphat and Bebe Miller.

Under a memorable thunderstorm, a double bill was presenting two rising dance figures. Quebec choreographer HÉLÈNE SIMONEAU has made a name for herself in the U.S. with her highly personal, athletic and fluid style, of which Delicate Power is a perfect example. ANDREW SKEELS, a Montrealer by adoption, has a subtle and sophisticated choreographic language, nourished by an insatiable curiosity, a great humanism, and a plurality of dance styles. This strategic alliance, a sign of the Festival’s rapid expansion, gave it access to an extraordinary team of volunteers, strong municipal support, and cutting-edge technical expertise—key assets that would propel the event to new heights.[/vc_column_text][/tab][tab icon_family=”none” title=”1992-1995″ id=”1773941709130-4″ tab_id=”1773941709130-7″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]

1992-1995: BIRTH OF A TRADITION

The history of the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur dates back to 1992, when the idea of creating a major arts festival in the Laurentians first emerged. This vision was driven by Lou Gordon, a prominent businessman passionate about dance, who founded the Festival des Arts Hiawatha that same year in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts with the help of friends.

The inaugural event, lasting three weeks, already featured an ambitious program, including Evelyn Hart of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Shapiro & Smith Dance from New York, Bande-à-Part with Anik Bissonnette and Louis Robitaille, Montanaro Dance, Fiesta Flamenco, and Margie Gillis. From the outset, the Festival established a tradition of artistic excellence.

At the same time, in Saint-Sauveur, several cultural initiatives emerged with the support of the Vineberg family, helping to energize the village’s artistic life. These converging forces would, a few years later, lead to the creation of a true cultural hub in the region.[/vc_column_text][/tab][/tabbed_section][tab icon_family=”none” title=”2023″ id=”1773941709151-4″ tab_id=”1773941709151-1″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]2023 A record-breaking & electrifying edition!

The 2023 season of the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur was a resounding success!

Together they took up the challenge of approaching Shakespeare’s play solely through dance.

Embodying the urban spirit of Los Angeles, BODYTRAFFIC has distinguished itself with energetic and refined works, carried out by performers of rare versatility in choreographies by Matthew Neenan, Micaela Taylor, Ethan Colangelo and Richard Siegal.

Calgary-based DECIDEDLY JAZZ DANCEWORKS celebrated both the traditions and the future of jazz dance.

He premiere Past Rooms.

Ambassadors of happiness and great communicators of musical passion, the ORCHESTRE MÉTROPOLITAIN and its illustrious maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin brought to Saint-Sauveur the lyricism and ardour of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Jean Coulthard, Wagner, Dvořák and Marquez.

Featuring the world’s leading dancers, NIGHT WITH THE STARS closed the Festival on a dazzling note, with independent artists and stars from the National Ballet of Canada, the Staatsoper Berlin, the Norwegian National Ballet and Boston Ballet.

In addition to the shows presented under the Big Top, the festival offers many free activities to celebrate art together: performances by Destins Croisés, James Viveiros, Nyata Nyata, Vias, Parts+Labour_Danse and Zeugma along the Dance Trails in John-H.-Molson Park, dance film screenings under the stars, swing and salsa dance workshops, two Dance Battles, one organized by Bboyizm and Crazy Smooth, the other by Sommet Saint-Sauveur, and the FASSart exhibition at Galerie ROD.

The Festival’s reach and the artists’ visibility are expanding thanks to partnerships with presenters and neighbouring municipalities. For example, the Dance Trails landed in Sainte-Adèle, where the public was able to see the work of Vias, Tentacle Tribe and La Tresse.

The cultural mediation project Mouvement de passage FASS, which allows artists from the Laurentians to meet with seniors who are losing their autonomy or at the end of their lives, expanded to the MRC Antoine-Labelle.

The finalist short films of the FASS Forward International Dance Film Festival were screened at the Théâtre du Marais, in Val-Morin, before becoming available for viewing on our website.

It is therefore a complete improved year that the public had the pleasure to live in 2023.

SEE THE 2023 PROGRAMMING[/vc_column_text][/tab][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content”
